History
Founded in 1992 by Jean-Pierre Boyer and Réal Marchand, Moisson Rive-Sud is a member of the Food Banks of Quebec (FBQ) and Food Banks Canada (FBC).
In 1992, the organization was founded as Centre de Distribution Alimentaire de la Rive-Sud (CDARS) by Jean-Pierre Boyer and Réal Marchand. These visionary leaders, owners of the Metro grocery store, decided to help people who were not getting enough to eat on the South Shore by offering them foodstuffs recovered from their respective grocery stores.
The Problem:
Despite the high rate of employment, it is estimated that more than 100,000 people, including 30,000 children, are living with food insecurity in the Montérégie today. This situation is compounded by global warming: almost all of the food surpluses are wasted and buried, accelerating climate change. The first victims of climate change will be those living with food insecurity.
At Moisson Rive-Sud, we believe it is possible, through collaboration and innovation, for all individuals and families in the Montérégie to have access to sufficient, nutritious, and diverse foods throughout the year.
This belief is our raison d’être.
Our Mission:
In collaboration with our members and partners, Moisson Rive-Sud supports organizations in the Montérégie working with vulnerable and/or food insecure populations while focusing on health, dignity, equity and waste reduction.
Social Commitment
Moisson Rive-Sud embodies the value of Social Commitment through its sincere and authentic involvement; it is committed to contributing to the improvement of the communities of the Montérégie.
Agility
Moisson Rive-Sud demonstrates adaptability and creativity through its decision-making processes and external collaborations. Its objective is to avoid crisis-driven or temporary solutions by supporting a forward-learning and innovative ecosystem.
Benevolence
Moisson Rive-Sud takes care of its employees, members, volunteers, and donors. It listens to them and strives to create balance in the face of their demanding social commitment.
Transparency
Moisson Rive-Sud is committed to measuring and documenting learnings, and to reporting transparently to members and partners on the results of its actions, while consciously working to make innovation second-nature.
The purpose of Moisson Rive-Sud is to create, manage, and promote a non-profit food distribution centre with the following objectives:
- Collect surpluses
- Recycle and distribute them
- Raise awareness among organizations about caring for the clientele
- Promote training activities and the foster human dignity
- Promote cooperation with local stakeholders
For Moisson Rive-Sud, it is essential to work on short-term solutions, such as the use of food banks, to mitigate the immediate effects of food insecurity, while working on more radical long-term solutions that target roots of the problem. This is why we also work actively with decision-makers to get things moving in the right direction.
In short, Moisson Rive-Sud recovers food on a daily basis from local producers and agri-food businesses to supply community organizations serving the vulnerable population in the Montérégie. In doing so, Moisson Rive-Sud contributes to sustainable development while ensuring food security and improving the quality of life in our community.
Moisson Rive-Sud is a member of the Food Banks of Quebec and a proud partner of Food Banks Canada. Through these networks, Moisson Rive-Sud benefits from advantages related to projects or partnerships that take the form of financial donations and the sharing of food donations.
Social Involvement
Moisson Rive-Sud is proud to support a diversified workforce within its own team.
We welcome young people to complete their internships, whether they are enrolled in a college or university program, or high school students participating in an adapted study program. Internships allow them to put their learning into practice, explore the community environment, develop work skills, follow instructions, and work in a team.
We also offer people who have to do community service or compensatory work the opportunity to fulfill their obligations by helping us with various warehouse tasks.
In addition, we welcome people who have been out of the labour market and wish to re-enter it by gaining recent work experience and renewing their confidence.
